INTEGRATIVE STUDIO 1/ 13.01.2020- 21.01.2020/ WEEK 2 & 3

WEEK 2

In this class, we were mad to watch a French movie called, Amelie. It was followed by a class discussion on what the movie was about, what emotions/themes did it represent and what it tried to convey. This is what I could extract from the movie personally and from the class discussions-

  • Amélie is an innocent and curious girl in Paris with her own sense of justice. She decides to help those around her and, along the way, discovers love.
  • Amélie is a story about a girl named Amélie whose childhood was suppressed by her Father’s mistaken concerns of a heart defect. With these concerns Amélie gets hardly any real life contact with other people. This leads Amélie to resort to her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty.

Critical Reflection-

Personally, I feel Amelie is a funny and interesting movie, that leaves the viewer seeing the world in a different way. There are many themes in the film including Happiness, Outsider and Reality vs. Fantasy. These themes are shown through the characters, the settings and the sound and music through out the film. I also felt that the movie comprises childhood tricks, for example, peeling off dried up glue from the skin, which was interesting because I could relate to that bit.

After the class discussion, we came to a common consensus and decided the main themes of the movie and that were-

  • Nostalgia
  • Curiosity
  • Vintage
  • Claustrophobia
  • Empathy

WEEK 3

We commenced the class with a discussion on the different stories we had read from the novel, Invisible cities and we shared one aspect that we retained from it, in front of the entire class. I spoke about the city, Thekla and how the city is always under construction in order to avoid deconstruction, leaving the stars to be the hidden blueprint. I found this to be the most interesting city I had read.

We went on to discuss the key aspects of the novel, like-

  • Neorealism
  • Abstarction
  • Interpretation
  • Empathy
  • Communication
  • Interaction
  • Tangibility
  • Observation
  • Reaction

From the discussion I understood that storytelling is the key to connect and communicate. The few aspects that I personally felt were represented were-

  • Symbolism
  • Change
  • Journey
  • Nature
  • Surrealism
  • Descriptive
  • Reflective

Combining the assignment from the two weeks, we were expected to click 12 pictures (2 per principle) and 3 photos that depict the aspects we had finally chosen in this class- Nostalgia, Chaos, Curiosity, Vintage, Empathy

As our assignment, we had to make 15 thumbnails, 5 cities with 3 different interpretations for each and complete one city in class. this is what I made-
